Next Normal Now: Re-Imagining Capitalism for Our Future

This year’s signature series of virtual events

The GIIN’s Next Normal Now is a new inspiring series of virtual convenings, which are designed to reveal systemic changes unfolding in the here and now. Learn from the perspectives of those creating this motivational change starting from the spring of 2021.

A glimpse into Next Normal Now

What would our future look like if our economic system were inclusive and sustainable? What would happen if we incorporated worker power, local solutions, or regenerative models into businesses and our everyday lives? Imagine if this world could become our next normal.

The GIIN is igniting a conversation around re-imagining capitalism and inviting YOU to join this year’s signature series of events, Next Normal Now.

Engage with leaders who are disrupting the status quo and innovators who are pushing our economic future not just toward a new normal, but toward the next normal beyond that.

Be a part of this incredible journey as leaders, innovators, investors, and global citizens explore a new vision for our economic future that puts you ahead of the curve. This series will offer vital insights for attendees at any stage of the ‘next normal’ journey and provide inspiration from visionaries painting a picture of their next normal. For impact investors looking for practical tools, new ideas, and conversations around innovative new investments, as well as the impact curious who are eager to learn about how money can do more than just make more money, this is the place for you.

This series of free live virtual convenings will leave you with a greater understanding of impact investing and how this growing movement is leading the way to a more inclusive economy and a more sustainable world. The first and second convenings focused on Inclusive Economic Growth and Climate Action, and the third session on Regeneration.

Our 2021 Next Normal Now series of convenings are our way of beginning some of the important conversations we will be having at the GIIN Investor Forum, on 12 – 13 October 2022, at The Hague. Inclusive Economic Growth, Climate Action, and Regeneration are just three of the world-changing topics you can dive into with 1,500 leaders and peers. Please mark your calendars now and register your interest here.

Our Regeneration Convening

Regenerative practices pursue a holistic relationship between humans and our natural ecosystems, implementing renewal and restoration to overcome the extractive and inequitable economic model. Thank you to those who joined us on October 27, to truly re-imagine capitalism and work towards a world where regenerative thinking is embraced and integrated into all aspects of society – social, ecological, and economic – so we can thrive together in harmony.

We invite you to the latest episode of the Next Normal podcast, featuring a conversation with environmental activist Paul Hawken, author of the brand-new book Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation, here.

Themed Breakout Rooms:

Registrants who joined us on October 27 were able to participate in one or more themed breakout rooms that explored strategies in Regeneration.

Air: Investing in clean air to restore, heal, and rebuild

According to the UN, a marginal reduction in Short Lived Climate Pollutant (SLCP) emissions will benefit human health and could reduce climate warming by 0.6C. Clean air is an effective regeneration strategy, especially in emerging markets. This breakout session will explore the ways in which investors are regenerating our air quality through investments in solutions that reduce haze. This session offers inspiring stories that demonstrate viable investment in SLCP reduction solutions, such as regenerative waste management and energy efficient power generation.

  • Tamar Roitman, Executive Manager, The Brazilian Biogas Association (ABiogás)

Water: Using clean water investments to build resilience

With water covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, marine and freshwater solutions are central to the needs of ecosystems. On the social side, water, sanitation, and hygiene investments are vital to healthy communities. Together, these investments are therefore critical to building a sustainable, inclusive world. This breakout discussion will focus on understanding how investors are implementing innovative approaches to preserve and protect biodiversity, sustain food systems and jobs, and build toward a resilient future through market-based water projects.

Land: Strengthening land and cityscapes for healthy ecosystems and communities

As the world’s population rises, demands on land resources – for food, materials, and living space – also increase, causing undue strain. In this breakout session, speakers will share pioneering land-based investments spanning sustainable agriculture and cities that are helping to meet the demand that humans place on the Earth while restoring, protecting, and fortifying the land and ecosystems from which they draw.

  • Arindom Datta, Executive Director, Rabobank
  • Yusef Freeman, Senior Managing Director, Jonathan Rose Companies
  • Tanja Havemann, Co-Founder & Director, Clarmondial

Humankind: Deploying innovative investment structures to accelerate inclusion

Global inequality has reached new peaks due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, and investors increasingly recognize the need to consider the impact of their portfolio companies. This breakout discussion will explore how investors can use regenerative practices to adapt their investment structures and terms to reflect stakeholder needs and accelerate progress toward social equality.
